Child's vision
PSHE at Fordbridge

At Fordbridge Community Primary School, we recognise the importance of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education in preparing our children for life beyond the classroom.
The National Curriculum states that all schools must have a PSHE curriculum in place that is broadly based, balanced and meets the needs of all pupils.
It must:
- Promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society, and
- Prepare pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
At Fordbridge, we follow the Jigsaw Programme of Study, a whole-school scheme that meets all statutory requirements and provides a consistent and progressive curriculum from Early Years to Year 6.
Jigsaw gives children the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills to help them to reach their full potential, both as individuals and as members of society.
Pupils take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and communities. This helps them to learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially. This helps them tackle many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
They learn to understand and respect our common humanity; diversity and differences so that they can go on to form positive relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.
Jigsaw PSHE supports the development of the skills, attitudes, values and behaviour, which enable pupils to:
- Have a sense of purpose
- Value self and others
- Form relationships
- Make and act on informed decisions
- Communicate effectively
- Work with others
- Respond to challenge
- Be an active partner in their own learning
- Be active citizens within the local community
- Explore issues related to living in a democratic society
- Become healthy and fulfilled individuals

British Values at Fordbridge
Other aspects of PSHE such as British Values are embedded within our school values and promoted regularly across the curriculum. As a school we aim encourage all children to meet our four Golden Values, these are to be; Respectful, Responsible, Reliable and Resilient. These values are regularly promoted across the curriculum, and the Jigsaw programme supports children in living them out every day.
How is each of the British Values included in a Jigsaw Lesson?
The British Values are promoted through the use of the Jigsaw Learning Charter which is shared at the beginning of every Jigsaw PSHE lesson. The Learning Charter is child-centred and aims to encourage children to work together and follow a set of ‘ground rules’ to create a safe, positive learning environment. The behaviours of the Jigsaw Charter are reflected in the whole-school Learning Charter developed in the first puzzle of the year (Being Me in My World), and will consequently permeate the school community, supporting children as they grow and learn. The Learning Charter supports the work that is going to happen in each Jigsaw lesson.

KiVa forms part of our PSHE lessons, it is an evidence-based program to prevent bullying and to tackle the cases of bullying effectively. KiVa includes both universal and indicated actions. The universal actions, such as the KiVa curriculum (student lessons and games), are directed at all students and focus mainly on preventing bullying. The indicated actions are to be used when a bullying case has emerged. They are targeted specifically to the children and adolescents who have been involved in bullying as perpetrators or victims, as well as to several classmates who are challenged to support the victim; the aim is to put an end to bullying. This proactive and responsive approach ensures that every child feels safe, valued and supported at Fordbridge.
